How does massage reduce stress?

Massage stimulates the parasymathetic nervous system. This stimulation releases feel good hormones, helps heal health conditions and regulates an emotional 'happiness' response.

The hormones released during a massage treatment increase feelings of content and improve mood. The benefits of receiving a massage to reduce stress are relaxation, pain relief and decreased feelings of anxiety and depression. Massage also helps the body to relax by lowering your heart rate, increasing the temperature of the soft tissues, and releasing endorphin hormones. Together these techniques result in the relaxation of the body, muscles and other soft tissues.

Massage to reduce stress can have a beneficial effect on decreasing the feeling of pain. Massages trigger the release of natural pain killers and feel good hormones that promote the feeling of relaxation. The touch of massage also interferes with pain signals which do not reach the brain; therefore the feeling of pain is reduced. The feeling of pain is related to emotions of stress. Once pain is reduced the feeling of stress can be relieved.

Does massage hurt?

Massage should not 'hurt' no, but there may be some sensation as those tight muscles relax. Modern living however can take a toll on us emotionally and physically; between working out, sitting at a desk, and  traveling, your body often doesn’t get the proper stretching and downtime it needs to recover. So, it punishes you by tightening up and giving you even more issues to deal with. It’s natural to want to feel your muscles loosen and the tension in your body melt away.

The key to an effective massage is good communication between the client and the therapist; while some discomfort at times is normal and simply means your tight muscles are relaxing there is a difference between a good and bad pain.

Our therapist Liz works in a really responsive and attuned way with all her clients and will adjust pressure and technique according to subtle (or not so subtle) changes in body language and physical response. Everyone has a different pain threshold and different perceptions of pain, which is why open and honest communication is key to a Body Positive treatment.
